About
Andy Astencio was born in Havana, Cuba in 1985 and lived there until he emigrated to the United States in 2012. He studied Graphic Design at the Higher Institute of Design in Cuba (ISDI) from 2007 to 2011. Before and during his time as a student, he worked as an assistant to a sculptor and painters, which deepened his interest in art. Emigrating from one country to another, he feels memory has become something extremely important and working with images is part of that process of constructing memories. His approach begins with the abstract idea of memories as images, using the accumulation of layers of paint to address the passage of time, the decomposition of the image, and how inaccurate a memory can be even while maintaining its meaning. For him, every work opens a world of opportunities to learn and experience. He lives in Miami and has worked as Art Director/Graphic Designer at Cigar Snob Magazine since 2012.
